On Attachment To People

As I read the Bodhisattvacharyavataraa, one thing that I struggle with is the notion that we should avoid attachments to people.

Though attachments to people may make the path to enlightenment more difficult, are these attachments not the the things that give our lives meaning? Is it not better to train oneself to maintain attachments to others and to pursue enlightenment at once?

To maintain this struggle, to train oneself to maneuver through it and to overcome it, I think is the greater path.

  1. Ernlightment seems awfully self-serving if you don’t make the world a better place for the knowledge. Interacting with the world without having to consider others isn’t much of a challenge. How often do we have bright flashes of epiphany because of the power of our love for someone else?
