The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is one of the most incredible things I’ve ever read. It’s massive, sprawling, and comprehensive in its coverage of roughly 1300 years of history.
The name is somewhat deceptive. It isn’t just a history of the Roman Empire. It features histories of many different peoples and does so in beautiful, witty prose. It offers invaluable insight into not just the history of the Mediterranean, but the modern world as well.
It should be required reading for anyone who wishes to understand the world we live in and is certainly deserving of the distinction of one of the great works of humanity.
