The location of my mother’s nursing home was run-down and badly in need of aesthetic attention, but next to the entrance in the front, someone had planted rose bushes that they carefully maintained. The roses were truly beautiful and fragrant, the spent blossoms removed and the bushes well-pruned. It often struck me how someone devoted themselves to preserving such beauty in a place that so desperately needed it.
